New Creation: I Love Cake III – One More Slice of Chaos
After working through the first two designs in my I Love Cake series, I had one more concept sitting in the sketch pile that I wanted to push a little further. I wasn't completely sure where it would end up, but after spending some time polishing the shapes, colors, and personality of the character, everything finally came together.
And I'm glad I kept working on it.
This latest monster brings another completely different personality to the series. Three wandering eyes, enormous teeth, dripping pink frosting, floating pieces of cake, and just enough chaos to make you wonder what exactly happened before you walked into the room.
These designs have honestly been some of the most fun I've worked on recently.
There's something refreshing about starting with a simple idea like "I Love Cake" and seeing how far I can push it. No complicated mythology. No futuristic world that needs explaining. Just strange characters, ridiculous expressions, bold colors, and whatever ideas happen to come out of the sketchbook.
Creative work has also given me something positive to focus on while dealing with some tougher moments in life. Sometimes sitting down, staying busy, and exploring a sketch is enough to make everything else feel a little less overwhelming for a while. That's one of the reasons I continue making things even when life gets complicated.
Not every idea makes it to a finished T-shirt, and I've become increasingly comfortable with that. I'll experiment, push a sketch around, and if I don't feel strongly about the result, it stays behind. I'd rather release the designs that genuinely make me excited to see them finished.
For now, this wraps up the current I Love Cake series, and I'm really happy with how these strange little monsters turned out.
There are plenty of other sketches waiting for their turn.
Different themes. Different ideas. Probably a few more unexpected detours.
That's part of the fun.
