Sketchbook Journey: Cybernetic Skulls & Tech Chaos

Back into the sketchbook again, and this time things got a little more mechanical.

For this round of sketches, I started exploring cybernetic and cyberpunk-inspired skulls, playing with different shapes and trying to find an interesting balance between recognizable bone structure and layers of chaotic technology.

The skull is already such an interesting form to work with. There are strong shapes around the eye sockets, jaw, cheekbones, and cranium that make it immediately recognizable, even when you start pushing and distorting everything around it.

That gave me a solid foundation to start introducing mechanical elements.

Instead of simply attaching a few pieces of technology to a normal skull, I wanted the machinery to feel like it was becoming part of the structure itself. Panels overlap the bone, mechanical components replace sections of the face, cables disappear into the neck, and circular forms begin breaking up the familiar anatomy.

The challenge is finding the right amount of chaos.

Too little technology and it just looks like a skull wearing mechanical parts. Push it too far and you can lose the underlying skull completely.

So most of these sketches are really experiments in finding that middle ground.

Some are more skeletal. Others lean heavily into the cybernetic side. A few started becoming almost robotic heads before I pulled them back toward the original idea.

And that's exactly why I enjoy doing these pages.

I can explore several directions quickly without worrying about creating a finished illustration. One sketch can influence the next, shapes can be reused or completely abandoned, and eventually certain ideas begin standing out from everything else.

There's already a lot here that I could see developing further.

Maybe one becomes a finished Cyberpunk T-shirt. Maybe another finds its way into the Skulls & Bones Collection. Or maybe pieces from several of these sketches eventually combine into something completely different.

For now, I'm just exploring.

Bone, machinery, cables, shapes, and a little controlled tech chaos.

Another page of ideas down.

And as always…

Let’s keep going.
