Sketchbook Journey: Catrina Concepts in Blue Ink
There’s something magical about the early stages of a design — when the lines are loose, ideas are raw, and imagination runs freely. These thumbnail sketches mark another step in my evolving exploration of La Catrina and Día de los Muertos artwork.
I wanted to capture elegance, beauty, and the deep symbolism behind this Mexican cultural icon. Each sketch plays with a different personality — confident, mysterious, bold, or serene. The hats are oversized and dramatic, adorned with flowers and feathers. The skeletal makeup contrasts with the softness of flowing hair and fabrics, balancing between life and death — a reminder that this celebration is about remembrance, love, and spirit.
These drawings may be just the beginning, but every line is part of the journey. As I refine these concepts into full illustrations, I hope they continue to honor the rich tradition of Día de los Muertos while bringing something unique and personal to the style. The final pieces will join the rest of my Day of the Dead designs featured throughout Ink Flux Designs — a collection coming alive with soul, stories, and color.
Thanks for following along as these ideas grow from a simple sketch to artwork designed to be worn, displayed, and celebrated. More progress soon!
